Howdy Townnpost! I've got an old levergun for sale that has had some TLC put into it and it's gotten some of its former glory back. This is a pretty early pre turn of the 19th century winchester in 38-55. I got this rifle in a trade and it was in a rather sad state of being. The original magazine tube had been cut down and had a crack in the wooden forend. Since then a new proper rifle length magazine tube and spring have been fitted and the wood refinished, and the crack in the forend properly repaired. The crack is actually quite difficult to see now, even on close inspection. The barrel had a fair bit of original bluing on it left and the new magazine tube did not color match very well, so cold blue was used on both to blend the color better so they match much better. The rear sight is a modified factory sight which apparently was a common thing that people used to do to sights back in the day since I've seen it an a few old 94's now. The bore is in relatively poor condition. It's dark, pitted and worn. There is rifling present and you can see the grooves clearly enough. It would probably stabilize a bullet. I can't say for sure since I haven't fired it myself. I think you'd be on paper with it, but we're certainly not talking anywhere close to sub MOA here.
This rifle would have some stories if it could talk. It's actually an antique class firearm in the USA because of its manufacture date. Here in Canada it's a non-restricted firearm due to being a centerfire firearm with a magazine. It's the "Rifle model" which was the very distant runner up in popularity after the carbine. The least popular version of the 1894 was the "musket" model.
